Lets increase our “Feel Good” chemical

Share

What is Serotonin?

Serotonin is a crucial neurotransmitter that regulates mood, digestion, sleep, and various bodily functions, often referred to as the “feel-good” chemical.

Functions of Serotonin

Mood Regulation

Serotonin is often called the body’s natural “feelgood” chemical. It plays a significant role in regulating mood and emotional well-being. Low levels of serotonin are associated with mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Many antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), work by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

Digestion

Approximately 90% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal tract, where it helps regulate bowel  movements and function. It plays a role in protecting the gut and can influence digestion speed in response to irritants.

Sleep Regulation

Serotonin is involved in regulating sleep patterns, including the transition between REM and non-REM sleep. It helps maintain a healthy sleep cycle, which is essential for overall health.

Cognitive Functions

Serotonin affects various cognitive processes, including learning, memory, and reward mechanisms. It helps enhance focus and emotional stability.

Other Physiological Roles:

Serotonin also influences other bodily functions, such as appetite control, and even desire for sex.

Natural Ways to Boost Serotonin Levels

Exercise

Physical activity can increase serotonin levels, contributing to the “runner’s high” sensation experienced after workouts.

Diet

Consuming foods rich in tryptophan (the amino acid from which serotonin is synthesized) can help boost serotonin levels. Foods like eggs, turkey and nuts are good sources.

Sunlight Exposure

Natural light exposure can enhance serotonin production, which is why getting out in morning light is so good for you.  So too is light therapy.  This is often used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Sociability

For some they get a very happy feeling when socialising.  Camaraderie, whether in a team sport or with a friend or group of friends, can really lift one’s spirit and make someone feel much happier.

Conclusion

Serotonin is a vital neurotransmitter that impacts many aspects of physical and mental health. Maintaining balanced serotonin levels is crucial for emotional well being, digestive health, and overall bodily functions. If you suspect a serotonin imbalance, ie feel low in mood a lot of time or very flat and down then do go and see your GP to chat about it and what you can do.
