Blueberries & the health benefits
Amazing how these little fruits can be so beneficial for the body.
The latest research from Kings College London & Reading Uni has been published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It has found that eating just a handful of blueberries daily for 3 months produced a host of health benefits:
- Improved memory
- Improved brain function
- Lower blood pressure
- Faster reaction times for activities in men & women from 65 – 80 yrs.
Studies have shown that blueberries are key to supporting health as we age. They have been shown to help preserve:
- cognitive function
- brain health
- fighting DNA damage
- fighting heart disease in older people
- helps lower cholesterol
Flavonoids & Antioxidants
All deep coloured fruits/berries & veggies are often higher in flavonoids & offer more health benefits. However, blueberries have been found to be the king of the benefits, highest in antioxidants.
You can eat them from frozen – again research into frozen fruits & veggies often shows higher levels of nutrients than from fresh. It’s because they are picked and frozen immediately which locks in the nutrients, unlike fresh fruit & veg which are transported, then sit in shops and then at home.
I buy frozen fruit all the time and I just have to remember to get them out before I eat them, to take the ‘edge’ off the coldness.
